Stardust

Append-only temporal data engine

Keep every change.Question any moment.

The data engine for applications that need one reliable source of truth, with the ability to time-travel.

Stardust replaces fragmented data sources with a reliable, append-only temporal data engine built on web standards and open protocol specifications.

The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff.
We are a way for the universe to know itself.

Why Stardust

The problem

Applications often coordinate data across several sources. This adds coordination logic and inconsistent state. It also increases load and makes applications harder to scale.

Data duplication and inconsistency can prevent access to valuable data. The resulting missed opportunities waste resources and reduce revenue.

The real problem is that data is not treated as a first-class citizen.

The solution

Stardust is an append-only temporal data engine that uses web standards and open protocol specifications. Its API gives humans and LLMs access to the same source of truth.

The result is a leaner application that scales without losing the capabilities of traditional apps. Streaming backups are built in, and data is immutable.

As an append-only temporal data store, Stardust keeps history queryable so users can explore data over time.

  1. 01

One data store to rule them all

Applications read and write through one engine, removing synchronization between separate operational stores.

  2. 02

    History is immutable and queryable

Every accepted transaction remains available. Temporal queries return the database state at a specified time.

  3. 03

    Made for humans and LLMs

Humans explore and change data through the interface. LLMs interact with the same data through the API.

  4. 04

    Embed in your application

Build a microlith: keep your application and data engine in one process, with clear boundaries between components. Call Stardust through native language bindings and deploy the library with your application.

  5. 05

    Schema can evolve

Schemas let data change shape without migrations. They project and validate data independently from the stored facts.

  6. 06

    Built-in streaming backups

Transactions stream to S3-compatible object storage or network-attached storage (NAS). After configuration, Stardust streams each accepted transaction.

  7. 07

    Controlled erasure when required

Blackholes remove selected knowledge from canonical history and enabled backups while preserving an audit of the erasure. This can support the GDPR right to erasure.

Team

Stardust is built by the team behind Datastar.

After three years as a side project, Datastar is now at v1. It is open source, and developers use it for real-time interfaces in production. That work showed us that the interface is only one part of an application.

Real-time interfaces also need a reliable data layer. Stardust puts current state and complete history in one append-only data engine. The same core team now focuses on that work.

Questions

FAQ

What is Stardust?

Stardust is an append-only temporal data engine built on web standards and open protocol specifications like JSON, JSON-RPC and LSP. It stores current facts and their complete change history.

What can I build with Stardust?

Stardust supports simple web apps and complex data-driven systems. Existing applications can integrate it through its web-standard API.

Does the license ever expire?

The Stardust license is perpetual and does not expire. It includes one year of updates. After that, you can renew updates each year or continue using the version you last updated to.

When will Stardust be generally available?

Stardust is currently in private beta. Apply for early access or join the waitlist. We have not set a date for general availability.

How do I know if Stardust is suitable for my project?

Join a live demo to see Stardust in action and discuss your use case. You can also contact our team for a consultation.

Is there a free trial?

No. We may offer a limited hosted evaluation version in the future. Until then, join a free live demo to evaluate Stardust before you buy a license.
